Mowgli was a stray dog who was getting on in years and living on the side of the road.
He was getting by with whatever scraps of food he could scavenge in the trash and seemed to live in the tall grass beside the road.

But grass and trees could barely shield anyone from the harsh elements, let alone a storm. In the distance, a terrible storm was brewing and a worried Mowgli seemed to understand this.
But before he could get stranded in the cold wind and rain, some kind-hearted angels swooped in to rescue this poor senior pooch.
Rescue from the Storm

Rescuers from the dog shelter Howl Of A Dog spotted Mowgli while they were driving. They could see the storm clouds on the horizon and immediately got worried for the dog.
They stopped and carefully approached a cautious Mowgli. The dog was defensive at first, barking at the rescuers and keeping a distance from them.

But the rescuers could see that behind Mowgli’s cautious barks was a cry for help. Not only was there a storm approaching, but the road had cars and trucks constantly passing by. It was not a safe home for a senior dog like Mowgli.
They tried to gain his trust and make him feel at ease with doggy treats. They didn’t want him to be jumpy and flee towards the busy road.

After some biscuits, the rescuers carefully put a leash around him and brought him back to the shelter. Mowgli’s rescue was just in the nick of time, as the weather immediately got worse shortly after.
Mowgli at the Shelter

After arriving at the shelter, Mowgli was understandably hesitant to step out of the dog carrier. To an old stray dog like Mowgli, this new place filled with genuine care, comfort, and stability is alien to him.
He was frozen in place for several minutes, taking in everything new around him. The rescuers gave him all the time and space to get comfortable at his own pace.

But the moment he fully stepped out, the rescuers couldn’t help but feel emotional. Mowgli looked like he finally realized that everything would be fine for him and that he was safe, cared for, and loved.
Old Habits

Rescuers don’t know how long Mowgli lived as a stray, but they could see certain habits brought by his stray life.
He likes to bury treats in his bed, and although it looks cute and playful at first, the shelter thinks this is due to his survival instinct of keeping food safe.

Despite his age (eight years old during his rescue), he is full of energy and enjoys walks! He adjusted well with the younger dogs.
Because of his tough life in the grass-filled “concrete jungle”, the shelter named him Mowgli!
Mowgli’s New Family

The shelter happily shared that Mowgli found his fur-ever home in Germany. He was adopted by a lovely couple who said Mowgli is such a sweet dog who enjoys walks in the forest.

Mowgli’s story is a great reminder that senior dogs deserve a loving home too. If you plan on adopting, consider opening your home and hearts to old dogs to give them love and comfort in their remaining years.
