Life in the streets can be undeniably difficult. With no warm shelter or clean food and water, and facing attacks from other stray animals and even malicious humans, it’s enough to break the spirit of any fur friend.

This was Zuzi the dog’s heartbreaking reality.

Zuzi was a stray dog living in a parking lot. She slept on the cold cement, drank from puddles, and hoped for any leftovers from people passing by the area. Sometimes, instead of food, she would get chased away instead.

At some point in her stray life, dogcatchers brutally tried to catch her with catchpoles. This traumatized poor Zuzi so much that she found it hard to trust any humans from then on.

Life seemed bleak for this pooch, who only knew hardships and pain all her life.

Zuzi’s Rescue

When Howl Of A Dog rescuers found Zuzi on a winter day, they saw how scraggly and terrified she was.

They knew they had to help her, but every time they reached out a hand, Zuzi would defensively bark, cower, retreat, and even attempt to bite their hand away. With her trauma, it was sadly all she knew to protect herself.

An employee from a nearby establishment told the rescuers about Zuzi’s history. To get her to their shelter, they figured catchpoles were out of the question. They did not want to re-traumatize poor Zuzi.

And so, the rescuers consulted a veterinarian, and under their supervision, they carefully administered a tranquilizer to the poor pooch, which eventually helped calm her down.

Slowly, Zuzi realized that these people were there to help her—and maybe, just maybe, her life full of cruelty might finally change.

Zuzi’s Treatment And Rehabilitation

Once the rescuers safely took Zuzi under their wing, they discovered more signs of her suffering that further broke their heart.

Zuzi had fleas all over her fur. Worst of all, she had wounds and scratches that may have come from other animals. They treated this quickly before it got worse and infected.

It took a while for Zuzi to warm up at the shelter. Her time as a stray made her fearful and distrustful, after all.

But the rescuers were determined to show her that kindness still exists in this world. With patience, understanding, and some treats, Zuzi eventually opened up to people.

She even got her own fluffy pillow with her name on it! Zuzi will never sleep on the cold ground ever again.

Zuzi’s Fur-Ever Home In Canada

A lovely couple heard about Zuzi’s tale through Howl Of A Dog’s social media page. Touched by her story, they personally traveled to Romania to meet Zuzi and give her a fur-ever home with them!

Zuzi now enjoys a life full of love and care in Toronto. Her new family shares that Zuzi “has blossomed into a loving and cuddly little dog” and would always ask for pats—a stark difference from her old self.

Kindness and love can truly be transformative!
